Go off the beaten track and experience the real England.
It’s not all about the destination, it’s also about the journey. You can’t always appreciate an area whilst travelling the busy main roads. Our smaller vehicles allow us to turn off the busy highways and take some of England’s delightful scenic back roads that the big buses can’t reach. Pass through charming villages and towns, see real English life in action. Admire wonderful countryside vistas, spot wildlife and relax as you travel through our rolling countryside in comfort. Our vehicles have been specially built for us with huge panoramic windows and a glass roof. You might have joined the tour for the famous places - but our guides know hundreds of quirky, beautiful and interesting sights along the journey. We want to share these with you.
- White Cliffs of Dover
- Warner Brothers Studio
- Scottish Highlands
- Dover Castle
- Secret places
Your time is precious - we know that. Your experience is our top priority.
We believe every guest must receive personal attention if they want it. Travelling as a small group, we can focus more individual attention on you so you can feel a part of the tour rather than just a spectator, whether you are travelling alone, or with friends or family. Our group size is limited to 16 people. We won’t herd you around while waving a flag, and you are not just a number - you are our guest for the day. Our feedback suggests people leave our tours feeling like they have been travelling with a group of friends - and have been guided by a friend - even if everyone started the day as strangers. So don’t get lost in the crowd.
Great sights don’t make an amazing tour. Great guides do.
We are proud to have a small team of handpicked and carefully and thoroughly trained guides working with us to give you a sensational experience. We’ve handpicked our guides from thousands of applicants for their passion, enthusiasm, knowledge and dedication to our guests. Our guides come from all walks of life and backgrounds but they all share a love for our country, its beauty, its history and traditions, and they all have a desire to share it with you, and their storytelling skills are the best. Even if you come on the same tour twice, you won’t have the same experience. Our guides don’t read from a script, we give them the freedom to make each tour their own, and your experience unique.
"If you are only going to do it once, do it with the best."
“Don’t waste the journey, go on an adventure with a great guide.”
"My guide philosophy is to describe, explain and entertain mile by mile destination by destination in a style that will create fantastic memories which will last for many years to come."
''I didn't think I could find another job I loved as much as my roadie-ing work until I found tour guiding. I'm a proud born ‘n’ bred Londoner, a history geek and I love showing off my country!!''
“I guide each guest knowing it may be the only time in their lives they visit these destinations and I aim to give them an experience they will never forget.”
“Tour guiding with The English Bus allows me to work doing something I love; sharing information about places and cultures that fascinate me and captivate my imagination.”
“Working at the English Bus is like being part of a small, slightly loony family! Making my customers happy is the best thing I can do to help this lovely little family thrive so it’s truly a pleasure to do so!”
"According to a local comedian, if someone explains Belgium to you and at the end you understand… it wasn’t explained right! Being proud of my Belgian roots, I will therefore happily leave you totally confounded!"
Chris discovered the magic of a small group tour whilst travelling around Australia.
Whilst deep in the Australian outback, The English Bus’ founder, Chris Horsey, took a small group tour to Uluru from Alice Springs. With a passionate, enthusiastic guide, who was a cross between Steve Irwin and Crocodile Dundee, Chris suddenly knew what he wanted to do with his life. Being part of a small group with a great guide, and taking the back roads that only a local would know - Chris saw the ingredients of an amazing tour experience, and it was the inspiration for what was to later become The English Bus.
Chris left a brief foray into the corporate world to start The English Bus.
With a background in teaching English as a foreign language, Chris started The English Bus, primarily for language students studying in London. This allowed him to test a wide range of destinations, routes, and tour styles in order to perfect the tours that are offered today. Then The English Bus started to evolve...
Evolution of The English Bus
Over time Chris adapted and adjusted the tours he offered to match demand and requests. During this time there was a big boom in tourism to London and he adapted his tours to focus more on those visiting London and wanting specialist day tours. Chris’ then fiance (now wife) Jen joined The English Bus to look after the office so Chris could spend more time on the road. With Jen’s customer service focus and strive for organisational and operational perfection, The English Bus stepped up a gear.
Becoming #1 ranked day tour provider in London.
London boomed post 2012 Olympics. In 2013 we bought our first luxury purpose built bus, tour guide Andrew (still with us!) joined Chris in guiding tours and we welcomed thousands of tourists. Our reputation grew, as did our passion and experience. Past guests got the word out and we found ourselves the number one ranked day tour company on TripAdvisor. In 2015 Chris and Andrew were joined by current tour guides Johny, Colin and Andy, we acquired a few more brand new coach built vehicles and for the first time we welcomed over 5000 guests in a year. 2017 saw us welcome the lovely tour guide Lilly, and we replaced our fleet with even better vehicles. 2022 sees us return after an enforced shutdown for almost 2 years and we are so excited to welcome guests back on board our award winning small group tours. Onwards and upwards...
